I had been sharing the practise of yoga for 20 years and had travelled to North India having many amazing experiences. Three years ago I had a strong desire to explore the Himalayas, a life wish my husband and I shared. As destiny would have it we met Panditji who invited us to join him on his October retreat in the Himalayas, we went.
Our first October Vedic Rituals retreat began in Rishikesh on the Ganga at the foothills of the Himalayas. Panditji made everyone welcome and at ease, we were garlanded and blessed in a beautiful welcoming ceremony on arrival. Our itinerary was clear and full of amazing events. Panditji has a comprehensive knowledge of the people and language of the Himalayas and reveals the significance of the temples, rituals, sites and customs in an open and inclusive manner. His enthusiasm is inspiring.
Our coach transported us through a misty morning to Vashistha’s cave, a place of deep meditation on the banks of the Ganga. Joy arose on our first glimpse of snow covered peaks as we wound steadily upward visiting the confluences, known as Prayags, of many rivers that make Mother Ganga. An overnight stay at a hotel then a 7km trek to Tungnath, the highest Shiva Temple in the world at 3,680m, it is said to be 5000 years old and built by the Pandavas. Tungnath is steeped in legend. Through fields of goats and cows we trekked with Sadhus and pilgrims steadily upward to a breathtaking view.
On arrival at the ancient stone temple Panditji had arranged a blessing ceremony for us. We then travelled to Panditji’s home, Badrinath. We stayed and Badriville eco village. All organic vegetarian food from the garden was served. Welcomed by the local band and more garlands and blessings. We felt so happy to be there. Badrinath is a holy town revolving around the temple which is a major pilgrimage site. Outside the temple are two hot spring pools for bathing. Panditji organised a visit to Mana village where Sage Vyasa wrote the Vedas, Mana village is close to the Tibet border. From Mana we trekked to Vasudhara Falls where the Pandavas ascended to heaven. Back the Rishikesh and home. Pure magic. We were sold. Very much in our element with Panditji we travelled the following March to Dharamshala and Rishikesh, the following October Kedarnath and Badrinath, the next March to Rishikesh and Varanasi, last October to Rishikesh, Badrinath Gangotri and the source of the Ganga.
We are returning once again this March. With Panditji the Himalayas have become our second home. We are forever grateful to our guide and friend Panditji who opened the door to this Himalayan world of wonder and changed our lives forever. In this life don’t miss this opportunity.
